Jason Rivera

Jason D. Rivera is an associate professor and the Chair of the Department of Public Management, lead of the Master of Public Administration program's emergency management specialization, and an affiliated faculty of the MS in emergency management program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He earned his PhD in public affairs at Rutgers University–Camden, with a concentration in community development. He is also the Chair of the Section on Emergency and Crisis Management for the American Society for Public Administration. 

Rivera's research focuses on disaster and emergency management issues, governance, social equity, and epistemology. His research attempts to highlight the experiences and perspectives of historically marginalized and impoverished communities across the world as a means of progressing equitable service provision by governmental and third-sector organizations. Along these lines, Rivera is a Fulbright specialist. 

Examples of Rivera’s work can be found in a variety of journals that include, but are not limited to, Disasters, Natural Hazards, Natural Hazards Review, the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, the International Journal of Emergency Management, Public Administration Review, and the Journal of Black Studies. In addition, he is co-author of Hurricane Katrina and the Redefinition of Landscape. His most recent edited volume, Disaster and Emergency Management Methods: Social Science Approaches in Application, provides researchers of all levels with recommendations and considerations for engaging in disaster research.
