Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies Grantee and Bill Anderson Fund Partnership Kickoff Meeting

Sunday, July 9, 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Ponderosa

This convening brought together grantees of the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies (MACP) Disaster Relief & Recovery program, which focuses on disaster preparedness, relief, and recovery, along with doctoral student Fellows from the Bill Anderson Fund (BAF), which aims to expand the number of historically underrepresented minority professionals in hazards and disaster research and practice.

The primary objective of the event was to lay the groundwork for future applied research projects that leveraged the grantees' practical insights and the Fellows' research skills to generate new knowledge that can inform improvements in the field. The Natural Hazards Center, which has a longstanding relationship with both organizations, coordinated this inaugural meeting as part of the 48th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop.

Outcomes

Facilitated activities such as serial networking, brainstorming, and project visioning helped the group collectively identify themes of mutual interest while exposing both Fellows and grantees to new approaches to collaboration. Engaging with disaster service providers and practitioners encouraged the BAF Fellows to begin honing the skills necessary for applied, solutions-oriented research. Likewise, discussions with BAF Fellows enabled MACP grantees to explore how research could be leveraged to provide systematically collected data about the populations they serve, the tools they use, and the processes they employ.

The meeting generated significant interest in potential projects and has already led to two new collaborative activities between the MACP grantees and the BAF. Future convenings are planned to continue to explore the potential for cultivating research and practice partnerships.
