For over 30 years, Craig Colten has studied the geography of hazards. He launched his career investigating pre-Environmental Protection Agency era hazardous wastes management practices, particularly seeking to document long forgotten disposal sites. In recent years his attention turned toward the historical geography of urban hazards, flood management practices, coastal community resilience, and adaptation to environmental change. Landscapes of community relocation is at the center of his current research. Examples of his work can be found in the books An Unnatural Metropolis, Perilous Place and Powerful Storms, Southern Waters, and State of Disaster.
