Knowing that damage, disruption, and dislocation all too often associated with natural disasters can be reduced or even prevented, Michael Newman delivers strategies for safer and stronger homes and businesses so communities can thrive. With 15 years of experience in law and public policy, he currently serves as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) and leads its public policy engagement at federal, state, and local levels.
In 2020, Newman joined IBHS from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he worked on a range of domestic and international policy issues related to climate change, resilience, cybersecurity, and insurance supervision. He now works with a team of scientists and risk communicators to turn IBHS research into real-world impact that enables property owners to prevent avoidable losses.
Newman informs, educates, and engages policymakers in support of policies that strengthen the resilience of housing, businesses, and communities. He also leads IBHS’s engagement with affordable housing providers, developers, funders, and policymakers.
