Incorporating Social and Behavioral Science at NOAA: Implications From the Research To Operations Workshop

Wednesday, July 14, 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. MDT

After hosting the first Social and Behavioral Science Research to Operations (SBS R2O) Workshop in September 2019, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) learned that weaving social science into its organizational infrastructure—including prioritizing the collection of longitudinal data and establishing data archives and societal impact performance metrics—could drive mission improvements. This session will outline major takeaways from the workshop, including how the Weather Program Office Social Science Program has incorporated workshop findings into strategic planning and program objectives and built relationships with organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Natural Hazards Center. This session will also provide a forum for the broader research and practitioner communities to engage with workshop findings and what they might mean for their community.
