Barry Levitt is chair and associate professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Florida International University (FIU) and a former fellow at FIU’s Extreme Events Institute. A scholar of comparative politics and public opinion, Levitt’s current research focuses on understanding public support for disaster risk reduction (DRR) policies, including the roles of political attitudes, risk perception, and past experience with disasters. He is a principal investigator on an National Science Foundation-funded collaborative research program (with Vanderbilt University) on public support for DRR in the Americas and lead author of a 2019 article on the politics of DRR in Natural Hazards Review.
