Innovating Nature-Based Solutions for Hazard Resilience
As climate-related disasters become more frequent and severe, nature-based solutions (NbS) are gaining recognition as effective, sustainable, and multifunctional approaches to mitigating natural hazards. From restoring wetlands to buffer storm surges to deploying urban green infrastructure for flood and heat resilience, NbS offer innovative ways to strengthen communities against environmental threats while enhancing ecological and social benefits. However, scaling these solutions requires addressing scientific, technological, and policy barriers.
This roundtable discussion will bring together experts from environmental engineering, policy, academia, and community planning to explore how cutting-edge research and innovation can advance NbS for hazard mitigation. Participants will examine key questions: What are the most significant gaps in knowledge, implementation, and funding? How can interdisciplinary collaboration accelerate the integration of NbS into mainstream hazard mitigation strategies? How can emerging technologies such as remote sensing, AI-driven predictive modeling, and biomimetic design enhance the effectiveness of NbS?
Through an interactive and solutions-oriented dialogue, attendees will share experiences, identify best practices, and discuss how research can inform policy and practice. The session will highlight case studies of innovative NbS applications and address strategies for overcoming barriers to implementation. By fostering collaboration between scientists, engineers, and policymakers, this roundtable aims to drive actionable insights that promote resilience through nature-inspired innovation.
