Student Volunteer Program

Natural Hazards Workshop and Researchers Meeting

Mayhem

Each year, the Natural Hazards Center invites students to apply to volunteer at the Natural Hazards Workshop. These students attend sessions and provide support to moderators, panelists, and participants throughout the event.

This year, registration and meal expenses for all student volunteers were paid for in honor of Claire B. Rubin! Claire attended the very first Natural Hazards Workshop in 1975. Over the years, she has been a steady presence at this meeting, bringing her deep expertise in emergency management as well as her good humor, care for others, and unwavering belief that we can use data and information to do this work better.

Claire turned 85 years old on February 7, 2025. In honor of her milestone birthday and the 50th anniversary of the Workshop, Claire’s family and friends made a generous contribution to support this year’s student volunteers. The Natural Hazards Center is deeply grateful and admires their commitment to pay it forward for the next generation of researchers and emergency management practitioners.
