John Bwarie has spent the past two decades building coalitions and communities, creating messages that lead to direct actions, and creating plans to achieve targeted results, primarily related to natural hazard resilience. Having worked for elected officials to co-creating the Great ShakeOut to guiding community engagement related to sweeping seismic policy changes, Bwarie’s diverse experience has enabled him to focus his efforts on connecting and empowering communities. He serves as CEO of Stratiscope, a community engagement company that harnesses the power of community to help organizations refine and achieve their core purpose. He currently acts as deputy director for the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society, whose mission is to apply science to build more resilient communities in the face of natural hazards. Bwarie also serves as the CEO of two Southern California (SoCal) Chambers of Commerce, as well as executive director of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California. He has also worked on resilience projects for the U.S. Geological Survey Natural Hazards Program, the Natural Hazards Center, and the American Geophysical Union, as well as developing and leading the SoCal Disaster Risk Reduction Initiative. In times of disaster, Bwarie is a media liaison to outlets around the world, coordinating expert information and often serving as a spokesperson.
