Rebecca Bicksler is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. Drawing upon fifteen years of international experience in consulting, teaching, and researching, Bicksler’s PhD research uses systems thinking to explore disaster vulnerability, drawing on critical disaster studies and complexity theories. Her current PhD project is a qualitative case study, which uses interviews and a scenario-based participatory game to better understand perceptions of disaster vulnerability in Southwest Florida. With a Master of Urban Planning from the University of Illinois, Becca started her career in floodplain mapping for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, worked on heritage preservation in flood prone Northern Thailand, researched risk communication for the Natural Hazards Center, and developed disaster risk reduction strategies with the World Bank. Having lived and worked in Asia, Europe, and North America, she has a global perspective on the intersection of disaster risk, urban complexity, heritage preservation, and community development.
