Film Screening: Hurricane Katrina at 20: Reflections from Policy Makers and Practitioners

Sunday, July 13, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. MDT
Location: Centennial E

Kathleen Babineaux Blanco was the governor of Louisiana when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita tore through the state nearly 20 years ago. This new film compiles interviews conducted in 2024 and 2025 with people who worked in Governor Blanco’s administration. Their reflections illuminate how the storms shaped public perception and the legacy of Governor Blanco’s policy decisions. They also highlight the monumental policy changes that were enacted in the wake of the storms. This film screening will be followed by a discussion to explore how complex and cascading disasters have changed the work of hazards professionals and identify areas that are ripe for policy change today.
