From Awareness to Action: Community Engagement for Advancing Risk Communication

Tuesday, July 15, 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Interlocken A

Effective risk communication can empower people and communities to protect themselves ahead of disasters and build resilience over the long-term. But knowledge of hazard risk is not enough, as limited resources, language barriers, misinformation, and other issues can stand as barriers to action. This panel will consider how we can advance risk communication to close the gap between awareness and action. Panelists will discuss strategies for crafting culturally appropriate and accessible messages, building networks of effective messengers, and deploying robust and purposeful community engagement interventions for risk communication. These actions, when taken together, can transform at risk communities into strongholds in the face of disaster.
