Social Science Saves Lives: A Human-Centered Approach to Landslide and Wildfire Research
Wednesday, July 16, 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. MDT
Location: Ponderosa
Disasters are fundamentally social events, but robust social science research on hazards like landslides and wildfires is scarce. Federal agencies are making investments to remedy this problem, and this session will spotlight two such initiatives. LandScope is a U.S. Geological Survey project that is uniting social scientists concerned with landslides, debris flows, and other geophysical hazards. The U.S. Forest Service Management & Safety Science Group was formed to advance wildfire preparedness, incident response, and post response firefighter safety through social science. Speakers from each project will explore existing gaps in the research and opportunities to build more robust networks to advance human-centered hazards research and its applications.
