Cultural Competence: Initiatives to Reduce Disaster Vulnerability

Mon. 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., Centennial F

To what extent, and under what conditions, do culturally competent initiatives increase representation of and reduce disaster vulnerability among underserved communities?

Cultural competence refers to the knowledge and skills that allow researchers and practitioners to understand, appreciate, study, and work with individuals from cultures other than their own. Culturally competent planning and practice has the potential to decrease vulnerability in underserved communities before disaster strikes and to improve the response and recovery process. In this session, panelists will discuss how to facilitate cultural competence in research and practice and how to measure the positive impacts of culturally competent strategies.
