Disaster Citizen Science: Supporting Disaster Response and Research
Wed. 9:45 a.m to 10:45 a.m., Centennial E
Residents of communities worldwide have increasingly been involved in collecting, analyzing, and using disaster data, but there has been little systematic study of the scope, nature, or impact of citizen science across the hazards lifecycle, or of how best to integrate citizen science with existing preparedness and response activities and systems. This session will highlight work exploring the potential of disaster citizen science to improve preparedness and response to disasters and other adverse events, and features perspectives of collaborators on disaster citizen science initiatives at the local, national, and global level. Presenters will share reflections from their experience and explore themes and examples that illustrate the promise of disaster citizen science, as well as challenges and opportunities.
