How Can We Partner for Change? A Discussion of the HayWired Scenario

Wed. 11:15 a.m to 12:30 p.m., Interlocken A/B

The U.S. Geological Survey and more than 50 partners from the public and private sectors developed the HayWired scenario, a tool that uses the likely impacts of a major earthquake on California’s Hayward Fault to illustrate expected damage and the actions that can reduce it. The fault line transects Silicon Valley, home to many of the world’s largest technology companies and a third of all venture capital investment in the United States. It is also an area marked by extreme social and economic inequality, with large amounts of vulnerable infrastructure and large numbers of vulnerable people. This closing plenary session will describe how partners are working to convey risks to the region, while also helping communities to get ready for the earthquake that will impact the Bay Area and beyond.
