Off the Radar: Getting Low-Attention Disasters the Focus and Resources They Need

Mon. 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., Spruce

In light of recent catastrophic environmental extremes, how can we ensure that communities that experience “low-attention” disasters get the resources and support they need?

For every spotlight-grabbing disaster such as Hurricane Harvey or the 2017 California Wildfires, there are numerous others that are frequent and severe, but affect fewer people. While these might not garner national attention, they still may have devastating impacts and local communities may face many serious barriers to recovery. This session will highlight organizations that assist those who experience smaller scale disasters and discuss ways to ensure that these people and communities receive resources and support.
