In September 2017, the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) were hit by two Category 5 hurricanes within two weeks, resulting in widespread destruction, a nearly complete loss of power, and many inoperative hospitals, health facilities, and schools. The loss of power, poor living conditions, continuous rain, standing water, and infrastructure damage led to major public health concerns among island residents. To address these issues, the USVI Department of Health had to develop a multi-pronged response guided by evidence-based, timely, and accurate data. In this session, attendees will learn how the department collaborated with partners across government and nongovernment sectors to overcome barriers and gather information needed to inform public health response efforts.
