Community-based research and engagement is critical for building disaster resilience. Although this work can be challenging and time consuming, it is fundamental to building disaster mitigation, response, and recovery plans that reflect unique community needs. It is also imperative that researchers are trained in cultural competency for ethical community engagement. This session will highlight a variety of approaches for engaging with community stakeholders and local citizens in a culturally competent way to collectively reduce disaster losses.
