Disaster Histories: Looking Back to Get Ahead
Tue. 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. MDT
Place plays an important role in communities and both the past and the future of places are intrinsically tied to their ability to be resilient to and recover from disaster. By exploring the history of cities and neighborhoods, planners and emergency managers can learn what community members value, why they might resist or embrace mitigation efforts, and what can be done to implement safer standards that protect both people and place. In some instances, leveraging the historical value of community spaces can bring in funding to make needed changes. This session will look at ways that communities can preserve their history while still moving to a more resilient future.
