Partnerships for Natural Hazards Preparedness in Puerto Rico
Wed. 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. MDT
Hurricane Maria had many devastating impacts on Puerto Rico, including more than 70,000 landslides on the island. After the hurricane, a team of researchers, students, and practitioners began an extended collaboration with local scientists, emergency managers, and community members to develop the Landslide Guide for Residents of Puerto Rico and a set of educational tools in Spanish and English. Another project called, One Community at a Time / Una Comunidad a la Vez, has used a community-based approach to all-hazards preparedness in Puerto Rico. Presenters in this session will discuss these complementary preparedness and mitigation projects and screen a short film highlighting the community preparedness workshops.
