Kyle Breen is an assistant professor of sociology at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas. He received his PhD in sociology and a graduate minor in Environmental Science from Louisiana State University in 2022. He received his undergraduate degree in Sociology from Eastern Illinois University.
Breen's research interests center on the environment, disasters, and social justice, examining the structural and systemic forces that converge to create disproportionate disaster impacts. Specifically, his research focusees on historically marginalized communities in disaster (racial and ethnic minorities; gender and sexual minorities); educational impacts and academic disruptions faced by students due to environmental hazards and disasters, particularly in higher education; and volunteerism and aid in disaster and emergency contexts. Breen is currently working on several Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada-funded projects that focus on Queer student resource needs in disaster, as well as a project focusing on educational disruption caused by labor stoppage using a worker's rights and disaster studies framework.
