Lorna Jaramillo Nieves has a PhD in geology from the University of Colorado Boulder. She is currently a research assistant dean, at the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras. She has worked at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras since 2004 as a professor in the Department of Physical Sciences, College of General Studies. Jaramillo Nieves currently maintains an interdisciplinary research focus with an emphasis on geology and the impacts of geological processes on society. In particular, she focuses on lines of research on geological risk issues caused by events common to the Caribbean region, such as mass movements, water resource management, and earthquakes. Since 2014, an investigation has been carried out on the relevance of the 1918 earthquake for Puerto Rico today through the work of primary references in historical archives of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, which has produced the publication of a book in 2018 entitled Earthquake in Puerto Rico, lessons a hundred years later. Most recently she was assigned as a liaison between the U.S. Geological Survey, the Puerto Rico Seismic Network, and the government agencies in Puerto Rico following the seismic sequence of January 7, 2020.
