Shane Crawford is a Civil Engineer in the Building Science Branch at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), organized in the Planning, Safety, & Building Science Division, Risk Management Directorate in the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration for Resilience.
Crawford joined the Building Science Branch in June of 2021 after completing a National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. His primary responsibilities include supporting the implementation of the 2018 Disaster Recovery Reform Act, the Building Code Adoption Tracking Project, and the National Initiative to Advance Building Codes. He has participated in numerous post-disaster deployments following tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes, including deploying with FEMA to the Champlain Towers South condo collapse in July 2021. The lessons learned in these deployments have informed research into improvements in codes and standards and guidance for communities to increase their resilience to natural hazards.
Crawford is active in various committees dedicated to creating and updating hazard-resistant codes and standards and bringing natural hazards research into practice.
