Sacred Heart University

Bethany L. Van Brown is an associate professor at Sacred Heart University in the Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Criminal Justice. She earned her PhD in Sociology from the University of Delaware. During her time there, she participated in projects about the movement of critical supplies after disaster, domestic violence and disaster, and post-disaster improvisation behavior. Van Brown’s research reflects the strategic goals of social justice by focusing on reducing social inequality in order to make people and communities more resilient. Disaster research ethics, community resilience, and how disasters may impact risk perception, and equity issues around COVID-19 are current areas of research. She believes that these topics address the root causes of inequality, challenge ideologies that perpetuate them, and provide policy implications that can objectively help communities be more resilient.
