Mount Royal University

Connie Yu is a multidisciplinary academic and frontline worker. She recently graduated Mount Royal University with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and a minor in creative writing. For over four years, she has dedicated herself to social work at the Calgary Alpha House Society, aiding vulnerable people struggling with addiction who have faced houselessness. Yu also founded the nonprofit Calgary Vegan Society in 2022, which is focused on creating more vegan spaces by connecting local businesses in communal spaces in support of animal and environmental rights, with funding support from organizations like the Arusha Centre. During her time as an undergraduate student, she was a founder of Write Club, a creative writing collective, in addition to becoming a published poet. In all of her work, Yu has dedicated herself with grit towards helping others, and she hopes to carve out space in the emergency management and disaster response space for more integrative interdisciplinary researchers.
