Harman Singh

Harman Singh is a dual-title PhD candidate in geography and climate science at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). She earned her master’s and bachelor’s in geography from Penn State. Her research focuses on inland urban flooding, disaster risk reduction, and water resource management in India. Specifically, her dissertation research leverages multimodal data (data that spans different types and contexts) to develop a better understanding of localized inland floods through spatial analysis, remote sensing, natural language processing, and qualitative interviews. Singh has also been part of interdisciplinary teams researching transboundary water sharing in India, environmental risks associated with Himalayan hydropower development, and the role of news media in solar and fracking infrastructure in Pennsylvania.

Singh has served as a graduate teaching assistant for courses such as Advanced Spatial Analysis, Cartography, and Spatial Analysis. She is an active member of the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure Graduate Student Council and currently serves as President. Within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State, Singh has spearheaded initiatives promoting sustainability practices and is on the leadership committee for supporting women in geography.
