University of British Columbia

Jonathan Eaton is a sociocultural anthropologist with a focus on heritage, the anthropology of space and place, and the anthropology of disasters. His research seeks to understand the affective connections among people, heritage, and hazards within the multilayered temporalities of disaster recovery planning. His ethnographic fieldwork in Vancouver, Canada explores how a bit of care and cultivation of place can help people preserve what they value in the face of approaching climate catastrophe and the unpredictability of earthquakes in the region. Eaton has a Bachelor of Arts in history from Valparaiso University and a Master of Arts in anthropology from the University of Toronto. He recently completed his PhD in anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and stepped into the role of postdoctoral research fellow there. He is currently the Executive Director of the UBC Disaster Resilience Research Network, a transdisciplinary group of researchers committed to inclusive and equitable disaster research.
