Jorge León

Jorge León is an architect and urban planner specializing in disaster resilience and risk assessment. He holds a PhD in architecture and urban planning from the University of Melbourne and a master’s in urban and regional planning from the University of Buenos Aires. Currently an Associate Professor at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), he has extensive experience in teaching, research, and professional practice.

His academic work focuses on urban planning methodologies that enhance resilience against seismic, tsunami, and wildfire threats. He has led multiple research projects, including Fondecyt-funded studies on tsunami evacuation strategies and urban vulnerability assessments. His contributions have resulted in numerous publications in high-impact scientific journals, book chapters, and international conferences.

León has actively participated in disaster risk modeling, integrating Geographic Information System-based tools into urban planning frameworks. He has collaborated with local municipalities, research centers, and international institutions to advance urban resilience strategies. His experience extends to academic administration, where he has contributed to the development of graduate programs and research initiatives.

Beyond academia, he has engaged in professional urban planning projects, serving as a consultant for various municipal and governmental initiatives. His expertise has also been recognized through awards, including excellence in undergraduate teaching at UTFSM.

Committed to fostering interdisciplinary approaches, he continues to integrate quantitative risk assessment into planning policies, contributing to safer and more sustainable urban environments in coastal cities.
