Nyla Howell

Nyla Howell is a PhD student in Geography at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in geography and environmental systems and sociology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Howell's research examines the intersections of Black geographies and ecologies, disasters, and adaptation. Centering Black geographies and ecologies, she focuses on how Black communities navigate and resist structural violence through mutual aid and placemaking practices in the context of disasters and hazards. She hopes to engage in participatory, applied research to support Black communities and disaster management professionals in public, private, and non-profit sectors.
