Framing Disaster: Concepts and Jargon in Disaster Research
Mon. 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., Pine
How useful is the continuing expansion of disaster research and its regular creation of new concepts and jargon?
Academic scholarship has been criticized for recycling old concepts, generating unnecessary abstractions, and using jargon that can stifle the ability to move knowledge into action. In this session, panelists will discuss the value of expanding academic hazards and disasters research in new directions, while offering recommendations for fulfilling disciplinary professional requirements and meeting the needs of practitioners and policy makers who could apply research results.
