Immediate Occupancy After Natural Hazard Events: A New Performance Objective

Wed. 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., Interlocken C

In 2017, the U.S. Senate mandated the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) produce a comprehensive report to support the development of a new Immediate Occupancy (IO) performance objective for commercial and residential buildings that will mitigate impacts from earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and other natural hazards. The intent of the IO performance objective is to move beyond life safety as the primary design objective and to move toward an even higher performance level that will ensure that buildings remain functional after hazard events. This session will give an update on the NIST IO report that details the research and implementation activities needed to enhance building design and address key social and economic issues and adoption concerns.
