Collectively Improving the Health and Safety of Vulnerable Populations
Mon. 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., Interlocken B
Social determinants of health are the economic and social conditions that influence individual and group health disparities. Effectively addressing these determinants is a public health strategy that builds community resilience and reduces vulnerability before disasters, but it requires working together across sectors. This session will highlight current research projects that address collaborative preparedness for at-risk populations. This session will also discuss the need for convergence between public health and human services before, during, and after emergencies. Panelists will illustrate how natural hazards exacerbate existing health disparities and discuss the need to mitigate through working together across diverse communities before disasters occur.
