Diverse Communities and Effective Risk Communication in COVID-19

Effective disaster risk communication must be clear, consistent, and issued by a trusted source. These qualities, however, can vary among diverse communities who have different levels of education, literacy, and digital access, different experiences with disasters, and different concepts of what qualifies as a trusted institution. This session will discuss ways to effectively communicate risk to diverse groups in during single, sequential, and concurrent disasters. Panelists will focus on COVID-19-related communication for immigrant communities, cultural constructions of risk perception, and risk communication strategies while easing restrictions.
