Serious Games: Community Priorities for Rebuilding
This session invites participants to play a matrix game created for use at community meetings. The game—which includes a board that outlines 10 different damage levels and 10 environmental shoreline conditions—helps to prioritize how to rebuild after disaster. Using green for go, yellow for inspection, and red for initiating a full environmental review, players can experience triaging redevelopment strategies. The game helps planning departments to develop rebuilding guidelines and protocols that can be communicated after major disasters. In addition to showcasing the game and its guidelines, the presenter will share experiential data from five community meetings where the game was used effectively. Participants will discuss whether this approach will work in their local community and/or for another disaster challenge. The session will also focus on other types of serious games and will invite audience members to share their serious game experience and research.
