Building Wildfire Coalitions to Reduce Risk

Panel Session
Tuesday, June 16, 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Centennial F

In an era of increasing wildfire risk, practitioners and researchers must build coalitions to effectively prepare and ultimately reduce systemic risks. This session will highlight lessons from recent major wildfires, including the 2020 Washington and Oregon Labor Day Fires, 2021 Marshall Fires, 2023 Hawaii Wildfires, 2024 Stillwater Fires, and 2025 Los Angeles Fires, and a number of minor wildfires across the Northeast. Panelists will describe ways to strengthen the bridge between local emergency management offices and the wildfire research community. They will also identify persistent gaps, explore actionable research questions, and highlight practice-informed strategies to improve wildfire evacuation planning and response. They’ll also discuss ways to build and strengthen partnerships designed to improve wildfire risk reduction outcomes.
