From Perishable Data to Disaster Preparedness: Quick Response Research in Texas
Research, Practice, and Policy Session
Wednesday, June 17, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. MDT
Location: Interlocken B
The Natural Hazards Center’s Quick Response Research Award Program—funded by the National Science Foundation—provides training and funding for the rapid and ethical collection of perishable data following disasters. This session will share insights from two innovative, quick response projects which explore hazard vulnerabilities in flood zones and wildfire-prone communities in Texas. Spurred by recent disasters, including the July 2025 Central Texas Floods and the Smokehouse Creek Fire in 2024, these studies seek to transform perishable disaster data into life-saving insights and interventions. Panelists from two research teams will discuss key takeaways from their respective studies on using high-resolution RAPID data collection to answer critical questions about flood risk in youth summer camps and risk communication for Spanish-speaking populations in the wildland urban interface.
