Enhancing Preparedness for Volcanic Eruptions

Concurrent Session
Monday, June 15, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Interlocken C

There are 161 threatening volcanoes in the Unites States, making it one of the most volcanically active countries in the world. It is essential that communities living with this risk have information for planning long-term land use and effective emergency response when volcanoes begin to show signs of eruption. The Volcano Hazards Program of the U.S. Geological Survey is working to improve volcano hazards assessments by building a coalition of scientists, land use planners, emergency managers, and others to develop useful hazard maps and other tools to inform risk reduction for people, property, and critical infrastructure. This session will bring together federal scientists and practitioners from states with volcano risk to share insights for an improved approach to determine, label, and communicate about volcanic hazard zones.
